Building Self-Esteem in Boys

In today’s world, boys are growing up in a noisy culture that often defines worth by achievements, image, or popularity. But what if we could raise boys who know their value not from external validation, but from the unshakable truth of who they are in Christ?

At Praxis, we believe that building godly self-esteem is foundational to developing the next generation of leaders, disciples, and kingdom influencers. Here’s how we can help boys stand up, be heard, and be seen—not for their own glory, but to live out the purpose God has placed on their lives.

1. Identity in Christ – The Foundation of Self-Esteem

Before a boy can stand tall in confidence, he must first know who he is and whose he is. Culture offers identity based on fleeting standards, but Scripture reminds us of a deeper, eternal truth:

“I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made…” – Psalm 139:14
“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works…” – Ephesians 2:10

When we help boys understand that their worth is not earned but declared by God, we anchor their self-esteem in something unchanging. They are fearfully made, purposefully designed, and deeply loved.

2. Stand Up – Courage and Conviction

Godly self-esteem isn’t about puffed-up pride. It’s about the courage to stand for what is right, even when it’s uncomfortable.

“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid… for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” – Joshua 1:9

Boys with strong biblical identity can stand firm in the classroom, on the team, and at home. They lead with humility, not dominance. They model Jesus in both quiet faithfulness and bold action.

3. Be Heard – Speak with Wisdom and Truth

So many boys struggle to articulate their thoughts and emotions. Some feel ignored. Others are told to “toughen up.” But Scripture encourages the young to speak—and to speak well.

“Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers…” – 1 Timothy 4:12
“The tongue has the power of life and death…” – Proverbs 18:21

We must create safe, grace-filled spaces where boys are not only heard but trained to speak with wisdom, love, and courage. When rooted in God’s Word, their voices can bring life, healing, and truth to a hurting world.

4. Be Seen – Living Authentically

To be seen doesn’t mean seeking attention. It means living openly, with integrity, and without shame. It means letting the light of Christ shine through every part of life.

“Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” – Matthew 5:16

Boys with godly self-esteem aren’t afraid to live out their faith. They don’t hide behind masks. They embrace their story, their gifts, and their calling—all for the glory of God.

Final Thoughts: Raising Boys of Purpose

Helping boys stand up, be heard, and be seen isn’t just about boosting their confidence. It’s about shaping their character. It’s about helping them discover their identity in Christ and equipping them to live boldly and humbly in a world that desperately needs godly men.

Let’s speak life into the boys in our lives. Let’s remind them who they are. And let’s commit to raising a generation that stands strong—not for self, but for the Savior.
